If you’re looking for a fun and memorable experience this summer without breaking the bank, consider a summer staycation. There are a number of activities one can participate in while staying close to home and we’re excited to share some of these with you.
Be a tourist
Visit the local museums, science centers, zoos and so on. Tour historical sites, local landmarks, or professional athletic stadiums.
Wet and wild
No summer staycation would be complete without spending a day at the nearest amusement and/or water park. If you’re close to a body of water, consider renting a boat or other watercraft like canoes or kayaks.
Pitch a tent
Whether in the backyard or after a backpacking hike in a national park nearby, sleeping under the stars is a great way to unplug and unwind.
Rent a truck if you don’t already have one. Fill the bed with blankets and pillows. Drive out of town where there is less light pollution. Lay in the bed. Look up. Enjoy.
This requires some planning but depending on how elaborate you want to make this, it could make for a very memorable and fun experience. Things worth finding could be people, places or things around town, or the neighborhood. Consider awarding prizes if you have groups competing.
If you’re not spending money on travel, lodging, food and other out of town necessities (related: How To Travel On A Budget), splurge on things you might not normally do around town. Ever wanted to try rock climbing? What about taking a class or seeing a play or show? If you don’t mind the additional expense, spend the night in a local hotel for the authentic summer staycation experience.
Sample the local fare
Find local festivals and events hosted in your city. You’re likely to find something happening in town every weekend.
At-home film festival
If it’s too hot or gross outside, round up the family and let everyone pick a movie that the whole family will watch. Compile the requisite snacks and refreshments and enjoy the show. Try taking breaks to rate, critique and review the films.
Having a memorable summer doesn’t have to cut into your savings account (related: How Do I Create A Budget?). Hopefully these summer staycation ideas will provide you with some fun or inspire you to put your own spin on one or more of these activities.
